Behind the scenes

Ghetto Angel
Had a shoot today with model Dollybeck at a secret location near Stanwell Park. The shoot title was “Ghetto Angel” I’d been wanting to do this shoot for some time and today we finally pulled it together with the use of some creative spotlighting powered by a generator, mobile studio lighting and a smoke machine. Special thanks to Dollybeck for her ease to shoot, experience and game attitude, also thanks to my wife Helena for her logistical input and assistence. Thanks also to Bret Walker for his skill with a smoke machine and assistence, to Jessica Marshall for a superb Makeup job and to Simon, Dollybeck’s husband, for being soooooo handy with the reflector!!

Andrew Kidman & Aaron Curnow

Me in the water getting a shot of Kidman in a tube
Had a surf shoot today with Andrew Kidman and his band at a popular Coal Coast beachie, Matty Johnson of www.thesealife.com.au also joined us for the shoot. I went for a swim to get the water shots and Matt covered it from the land angle. That’s kidman in the tube and the finner shot is Aaron Curnow from “Spunk Records” who provided some of the tracks for “Last Hope” and produced the movie too. White Humpback Whale Tail, Stanwell Park
A glorious warm winters day today at Stanwell Park and we have been graced by the presents of a few legendary beings. Firstly the migration of the Southern Humpback Whale swings right by our doorstep on their way to breeding grounds at Hervey Bay QLD and these fellows weren’t shy of coming close to the beach and giving all around a rare treat to behold. This was a pod of around half a dozen whales who seemed particularly active in breaching the surface with fins wafts and tails etc and there was also one curious white whale in the group, is that rare? Never seen that before!

Southern Humpback Whales at Stanwell Park
The second legend to arrive at the beach was film maker Andrew Kidman of “Litmus” and “Glass Love” fame, he’s in the area promoting his latest offering “Last Hope” which is currently touring the East Coast of NSW. I’ll be shooting with him tommorrow so watch this space.

The Brown Birds From Windy Hill
This evening Andrew Kidman and his band ‘The Brown Birds From Windy Hill’ were playing at The Heritage Hotel in Bulli, NSW as part of their tour with Andrew’s latest surf flick ‘Last Hope’. They showed the film on a projector screen and played the music live from the movie. Here are a couple of shots from the night. Great film.

Cape Solander widow makers
The largish ENE swell was still rolling in this morning, allbeit very few and far between the bigger sets but the winds were favourable so I went for a drive up to Cape Sol. Tim Bonython was there all rigged up and ready to film Mark Matthews for his latest movie, who turned up a few minutes later. Conditions were difficult at “Ours” due to the north in the swell making the set waves turn into thick warping widow makers as they exploded onto the reef. Getting the wrong side of one of these fellas would ruin your weekend for sure!!

South Coast Reefs
Plenty of south swell and offshore winds today on the NSW South Coast. We managed to get two water shoots in today at two separate South Coast reefs, we being myself shooting with surfers Dan Sargent & Curt Bate. The body boarder is Jones Russell of Turbo Surf Designs and the guy bottom left a split second away from a world of hurt is unknown. A police chopper turned up for a while to watch the shoot from the skies, giving the boys a round of sirens and lights and a thumbs up to show their appreciation!

sunrise silhouette
The surf has really picked up over night with solid 4ft waves up to 6ft on the sets out front here at Stanwell park and the banks or heaving it up under the pressure, will no doubt be shooting later. Meanwhile I set the 600mm lens up and waited for the sunrise on this clear morning, when one of those rare moments occured that puts a smile on a photographers sleepy face, one those moments when it all comes together. Just as the suns colour filtered through the haze a Boeing 747 tracked straight across the orb in perfect silhouette on it’s way into Sydney Airport … happy days!
