I was woken to the sound of the gate smashing outside in 45 knot gusting offshore winds and blazing sunshine, big change from yesterdays shitty day. I grabbed my Nikon and 300mm F2.8 lens and wrapped up like Laurence of Arabia to tackle the sand storm on the beach, this is what I got…..

Mark Mathews taking a heavy one at Cape Solander, Mick Fanning and Andy Irons turned up to ride too but headed south to find cleaner surf followed by an entourage of photographers, they scored big time too!!

I have been trying to nail a back of wave shot for a while now and never quite getting one I was truly happy with. The clarity of water, light, wave, camera settings, everything has to come together and be spot on, today I came closest I’ve got to getting the shot I want, tho there is still major room for improvement, efforts will be doubled!!

2-3ft Sloppy surf wasn’t enough to put local surfers Dan Sargent & Dallas Petersen putting on a great airshow today. The surf may not have been epic but the light and backdrop was spot on.

Sometimes I wake up in the morning and head off down the beach with a carefully thought out plan of what I want to shoot and how. Then when I get there something else catches my eye, another scenario presents itself quite out of the blue and ends up being a better image than the one I’d been planning for days!!! Today was such a day, these guys oblivious to me shooting composed themselves perfectly. Here’s to the randomness and unpredictability of life and light!!
