Wave dodger

Wave dodger

The waves were looking a little ordinary at best in Stanwell Park today with what remains of the large east swell we just had. The wind was from the south so I headed down toward the south coast were i knew a few north facing spots would be on - and they were!!

Sydney Opera House

Sydney Opera House

I went into the big smoke today - Sydney - just for a walk around to get a few shots as I wanted to try a photographic technique call HDR - High Dynamic Range. It’s basically merging several images taken on different exposures to  achieve as much detail in the shot as possiblewithout burnt out highlights or overly dark shadow areas. These pics are my first attempt.

The total lack of swell has meant more spearfishing, the clarity of the water right now is awesome though. Bret and a poor drummer fish. We barbecued this one with lemon and pepper, very tasty!!

Sydney Shark Dive

Magic Point Dive

Today my wife Helena and I did the Magic Point shark dive in Sydney. This dive site is located just south of Maroubra Beach and is home to a colony of up to 20 Grey Nurse Sharks at any one time. The sharks here range from 2 to 4 meters in length but are usually very placid sharks and of no reak threat to humans, though they do really look the part and have several rows of large teeth on display. Unfortunately for us the visibilty was pretty bad today, only around 5-8 meters so I didn’t manage to bag a classic shot of these sharks, but I will be trying again shortly. We did see loads of Port Jackson sharks too and a giant cuttlefish. All shots were taken on a 16mm Nikon lens & a Fuji s2 Pro DSLR camera in a Aquatica Dive housing and 2 Inon Z220 strobes for lighting. Thanks to the team at Abyss Diving for a great day.

This Saturday was the 9th Annual L.A. Invitational event held at Little Austimer Beach, NSW.  The heats kicked off around 7am in weak 2ft surf and the first beer was cracked open around 7.01am, be rude not to and after all it is for charity, mates! The surf didn’t improve much through the day but the sun was shining and the party atmos was present as always!! I really don’t know the name of the guy who won but if someone can email to fill me in I’ll credit him here, so professional,
